He thrived with an increased work load compared to his first full season in Adelaide in 2015.
"Having a bit more ice time last year helped a lot," says Boyle. "Being away and playing a lot of hockey helped me develop."
Originally a forward,Boyle has spent the last two seasons as a defenseman. He spent two years on the Australian National Junior Team (Under 20) and previously spent two years on the National Under 18 squad.
With 66 AIHL games under his belt as a teenager he is already one of the most experienced young players in the league. This season Boyle says he is looking to take the next step.
"I need to keep pushing myself, work harder than I ever have before. As you play longer you see the work ethic required to compete here," he says.
"I want to be the guy that is strong and reliable defensively but can also join the rush with the forwards," he adds.
Boyle has showcased his improved game in front of Adelaide fans in his stint with South Australia's junior squad - the Generals. Boyle helped lead the team to the first gold medal in nearly a decade.
More than a hockey player, Boyle is a perfect role model for those in the community. He regularly volunteers his time helping to coach junior players in the state, he is always at Ice Factor helping introduce new students to the game and is known as one of the friendliest guys in the rink!
Zach had his first full season in the AIHL with the 2015 edition of the Adrenaline. He scored a goal and added six assists.
The Adrenaline struggled with injuries and suspensions last season. At one point both forwards Cole MacMillan and Josef Rezek were manning the blue-line.
Although he didn't play with him, 2016 Adrenaline import Cole MacMillan says Boyle's presence will be big for the Adrenaline.
"Just having another talented guy is huge. He's smart, he's good on his feet, he's fast, he has a good shot. It's a big add," he says.
Boyle will make his return to the Adrenaline fold when they start the 2017 season at home on April 22 vs. the Newcastle North Stars. Tickets can be purchased through the website.
