It was a monumental occasion for Australian Ice Hockey and the AIHL, with the debut of the AIS Arena, the new home of the Canberra Brave.
In May the Brave went to Adelaide for the Adrenaline's home opener, where the pulled out an OT win on the Saturday and a regulation win on the Sunday - the Brave spoiled the Home Opener for the Adrenaline, but could the Adrenaline spoil the Brave's?
The Adrenaline came out of the gates flying, the 3000+ crowd was pumping and it was puck drop and away we go! Just past the halfway point of the frame, #8 Sean Greer stamped his name on the scoresheet with a shot from the blue line finding its way through traffic.
Chances at both end were cancelled out by both teams' goalies,, as well as some puck luck on bounces off of the pipes, but at the death of the period #51 Daniel Chen jammed one home passed Tetrault on a third-chance opportunity, giving the visitors a two-goal lead after 20.
In the second period it was #7 Ryan Foll bringing the visiting fans to their feet, skating down the left wing and ripping one home, putting his team well in the driver's seat at 3-0.
With 7:20 remaining in period two, Kai Miettinen breathed some life into his team, putting the Brave on the board for the first time at the AIS arena. The period could be summed up in just two words - Cale Dolan. He saved 11 of the 12 shots in the period, stopping multiple breakaways and odd-man rushes, including a 2on0 late in the period!
The third and final period came by and the Brave were knocking on the door, hoping to have a fairytale homecoming to their new venue. With just under 3 minutes to go and shorthanded, Cameron Todd got his team within one and it was all to play for headed into the final two minutes.
Following a timeout for the home team and 3000 fans on their feet, Tetrault left his net for the extra skater, despite the 6on5 advantage, the Adrenaline hunkered down and with some huge plays in the defensive end and in transition into the neutral zone, they picked up their first one of the season, flipping the script and ruining the potential party at the AIS on opening night.
