The Adelaide Adrenaline climbed the ladder surpassing the Central Coast Rhinos after back-to-back victories.
Adelaide closed off a dominant weekend on home ice with a 4-1 win over the Central Coast – securing a clean sweep and six crucial points.
The confidence and energy were high heading into Sunday’s game after Saturday night’s massive 7-2 win.
Adelaide were coming off a strong momentum and took control of the puck and upping the intensity.
Despite being outshot by Central Coast, Adelaide were successful in lighting up the scoresheet with two goals from Joey MacDougall and Roman Nekludovs. MacDougall took advantage of the two-minute powerplay opportunity and netted the rebound in to give Adelaide the lead half-way through the first period.
With less than three minutes of the first, Nekludovs skated all alone in a breakaway and buried the puck past Rhinos goaltender Anand Oberoi to double the lead.
In the second period, Adelaide kept the pace going. Just like Saturday’s game, Nekludovs’ playmaking got Adelaide another goal when he made a centring pass to Coy Prevost who finished it off to make it a 3-0 game.
Adelaide continued to hold off Central Coast’s scoring effort, defensively locking in to push any of the Rhinos’ opportunities away. Even with the three-goal lead, Adelaide headed to the third relentlessly, extending their lead once again. Josh Adkins skated into the left side of Central Coast’s net and slid the puck smoothly past Oberoi who didn’t see it coming.
After struggling to find the back of the net for the entire game, Tomas Landa put Central Coast on the board with thirty seconds left on the clock denying Cale Dolan of a shutout. By the end of the game.
The Adrenaline outshot the Rhinos 34-32 in a high-energy match-up that showed both team’s desperation to come out on top.
Adelaide has spent the season so far at the bottom of the standings but the six-point weekend has lifted them into a new position – they are only two points behind the Canberra Brave now.
The Adelaide Adrenaline will now enter a bye week before hitting the road to face the Melbourne Mustangs at the O’Brien IceHouse in two weeks’ time.
