The Adelaide Adrenaline Ice Hockey Club would like to announce that forward Wehebe Darge has joined UK based team the Peterborough Phantoms for the 2016-17 English Premier Ice Hockey League season.
Wehebe joins the Phantoms as an import player after competing in the 2016 Australian Ice Hockey League season, during which he was named the league’s most valuable player.
The 24-year-old was the leading scorer amongst Australian-born players in the 2016 AIHL season with 52 points (20 goals, 32 assists) and was also the leading scorer for the Adrenaline.
Darge last played overseas in 2015 for Chiefs Leuven in the Belgian Elite League where he tallied 55 points (23 goals, 32 assists) in just 21 games played.
He has also played internationally, most recently in the IIHF Division 2B World Championships, where he guided Australia to a gold medal with 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists) in 5 games.
The opportunity to play hockey on yet another continent is important to Darge as he continues to broaden his horizons and develop his skills.
“I’m really excited to be playing in the United Kingdom and joining the Phantoms this season. I look forward to learning from my team and being challenged in the British league,” Darge said on the Phantoms website.
“I hope that that the skills I’ve gained from playing in North America, Belgium and Australia will help the Phantoms succeed this season.”
The EPIHL season began in late August and runs through until mid-March.
Pending immigration requirements, Darge will join the team for this upcoming weekend.
