The Adelaide Adrenaline, proudly presented by Hards Transport took maximum points from their opening weekend encounter with the Sydney Ice Dogs, running out convincing 6-3 winners on Sunday.
After a scrappy, tightly contested affair on Saturday, in which both sides showed only glimpses of high quality hockey, the home side stepped it up, dominating the game for the first two periods.
The game began in an even manner with both sides once again trading chances to no avail before TJ Battani opened the scoring on the powerplay for his fourth goal of the season.
Adrenaline Head Coach Trevor Walsh praised Battani’s efforts through four games.
“When we brought him here we knew he was going to add some scoring punch but it’s his physical game that he brings too, he’s an all-rounder and we’re really happy to have him,” Walsh said.
However, Battani’s physical play saw him headed for an early shower after a fight at the end of the first period ended his game prematurely.
The resulting penalties saw Ice Dogs with an early second period powerplay, which became a 5-on-3 for 1:47 after Wehebe Darge took a hooking minor.
The Adrenaline penalty kill held firm as the Ice Dogs squandered multiple good scoring chances with the man advantage.
Goalie Peter King was impressed with his team’s ability to re-establish dominance after the draining penalty kill.
“The two powerplays against us really killed us for a bit and zapped us but then the boys really picked it up, we took our chances and when we had our opportunities on our powerplay we put them away,” King said.
The chances were indeed taken, with the Adrenaline netting four goals to four different goal scorers in the middle period.
Walsh praised his team’s middle frame but stressed the need for consistency across the whole game.
“The second period we were happy with, we were disciplined and moved the puck around well, we had all our lines going but we came out in third and let them back in it, so I was a little disappointed in that, we’ve just got to get more consistent,” Walsh said.
Like Saturday, the Sydney Ice Dogs showed fight, mounting a late charge, outscoring the Adrenaline 3-1 in the final period.
However, the 5-goal deficit was too big a hill to climb for a plucky Ice Dogs outfit that can take away some positives from the weekend but were overall outplayed and too inconsistent.
