The inaugural season of Ice Hockey South Australia Summer Junior League concluded with style at the weekend with an awards ceremony celebrating the best and hardest working players from across the competition.
The league, which caters to the 15 to 22 age bracket, showcases the brightest local talent, drawing from within Adelaide’s hockey clubs as well as from the Ice Factor program for at-risk youth.
League co-ordinator, Mike Gainer is impressed with popularity of the league since its inception and says there is a lot of interest from junior players, pointing to the fact club membership has doubled since the league began.
“We used to have this age group but didn’t do it for a long time because we didn’t have the numbers, but there’s a lot of kids out there who weren’t club members but were willing to play,” Gainer said.
Gainer also noted the league was really about assisting the development of the best ice hockey talent in South Australia.
“A lot of them were Ice Factor kids, we recruited from that program, picking out the standout performers… the league also gives more hockey to the guys at the top end who will push for selection with the Adrenaline,” Gainer said.
Following this season’s success, Gainer hopes the Summer Junior League continues to grow and expand.
