Adrenaline Scoring Woes Dominate Poor Home Weekend

Adrenaline Scoring Woes Dominate Poor Home Weekend

Myles Wallace

A disappointing weekend for the Adelaide Adrenaline was capped off with a second loss against a physical and defensively sound Melbourne Ice outfit at the Thebarton Ice Arena in Adelaide.

Despite dominating the game and registering over 40 shots on goal, the Adrenaline could not solve Ice goaltender Alex Leclerc who was stellar all weekend, denying the Adrenaline of any points in a crucial double header in front of their home crowd.

Coming off the back of a frustrating loss on Saturday, the Adrenaline looked determined to address the issue of poor starts and came out strongly, controlling the play for most of the first two periods.

The home side’s failure to capitalise on their many scoring chances left the door open for an opportunistic Melbourne side, who opened the scoring in the second period with a powerplay goal and never looked back.

Coach Ryan O’Handley lamented his team’s lack of finish but credited a defensively solid Melbourne side.

“That’s hockey sometimes, I think we outshot them… so 40 plus shots for one goal and we got it with the goalie pulled but I mean credit to them, they collapsed well in front of their net and their goalie played a very good game but we have got to find ways to score goals,” O’Handley said.

O’Handley noted there is no easy solution but was adamant his side’s luck can turn around quickly.

“You can’t panic, if you are getting chances you have just got to believe they are going to start going in for you and we are getting chances… sometimes it’s like throwing on a light switch and suddenly you start scoring goals,” O’Handley said.

Unfortunately for the Adrenaline, they once found themselves with too much to do and too little time.

Canadian import and newest addition to the team, Kory Helowka stressed the team has to be better across three periods and said the side has a lot of work ahead.

“Tough one for sure, we can’t leave it to the third period every single game and expect to win too many so we got a lot of work to do this week to get us ready for next weekend, some big, big games for us, make or break for our season for us,” Helowka said.

The Adrenaline next weekend face the CBR Brave at home in another double header and the two games loom as crucial to Adelaide’s finals aspirations as they match up against a resurgent Brave side nipping at their heels in the standings race.
