In the first of two road games against the Melbourne Ice this weekend, the Adelaide Adrenaline manufactured a spirited comeback victory in a game that was marred by a large number of penalties.
After trailing by a goal late in the second after conceding a short-handed tally, the visitors rallied to secure the first points of the weekend and taking the game 4-2.
Penalties were a theme throughout the game, with both sides finding themselves a man down on numerous occasions and despite the Ice having the better of the special teams were unable to convert it into a win.
The game started as a defensive battle with the visitors looking to make their presence felt as they grappled to adapt to the larger ice surface.
The tone of the game was set early as the Adrenaline once again got in to penalty trouble, surrendering a two-man advantage and eventually conceding a power-play goal late in the opening frame.
The Adrenaline managed to equalise early in the second thanks to English import Jonathan Boxill’s second goal as a member of the Adrenaline.
The game continued in much the same vein with both teams taking a plethora of penalties however, neither side capitalised in man advantage situations until the Ice scored short-handed, taking a well earned 2-1 lead into the third period.
The third period belonged to the Adrenaline as they equalised and then took the lead late in the period thanks to Wehebe Darge, who recorded the game-winning goal in his return to the lineup.
Charlie Smart was once again very solid in net and remains undefeated; recording his fourth victory in as many starts and is proving to be an invaluable addition to the Adrenaline roster.
The second game of the weekend takes place tomorrow at 4PM Melbourne time at the Medibank IceHouse.
