The Adrenaline again played host to the Sydney Bears in a Mother’s Day clash at the Ice Arena in Thebarton.
The second game between the two teams this weekend also represents their last meeting of the season and the Adrenaline were looking to claim a sweep after getting the better of the Bears in their previous three encounters.
Putting everything on the line to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat to open their season it was the Bears who took the points with a solid 3-1 victory.
Despite controlling much of the play, the home side could not solve Sydney goaltender Kamila Jarina who had an outstanding showing, turning away all but one of the Adrenaline’s shots.
Adelaide coach Ryan O’Handley said Jarina deserved a lot of credit for the win but was disappointed in his side’s inability to convert.
“[Jarina] had an outstanding game, so he probably stole one for them… but one goal isn’t going to win you many games in the AIHL, so that’s something we got to look at, we have to start burying our chances,” O’Handley said.
Lapses in discipline again proved costly for the Adrenaline, who found themselves down a man and surrendering momentum to the Bears.
Adrenaline Captain, Greg Oddy was disappointed in the loss and stressed the importance of remaining disciplined throughout.
“We probably took a couple penalties at the wrong time, when we had the momentum and that probably hurt us in the end,” Oddy said.
Both sides had a large number of scoring chances from the outset, with the Bears forcing Adrenaline goaltender Peter King to make 19 saves in the first period.
King, who has yet to record a win this season was sharp early and made some critical stops including a magnificent save to deny Mario Passarelli’s breakaway chance.
The Adrenaline came out strong in the second and opened the scoring courtesy of Steve Best and controlled much of the play in the first half of the period.
This however, was as good as things got for the Adrenaline as they surrendered momentum in the latter stages of the second period taking consecutive penalties and ultimately surrendering a power-play goal.
The power-play goal proved to be a dagger to the heart for the Adrenaline who were unable to recover the one goal deficit and ended up conceding a third goal late in the game to hand the Bears their first victory of the season.
