The Adelaide Adrenaline are pleased to announce the signing of Minnesota-based import and former USA national team representative Charlie Conway. The forward is expected to join the team ahead of it's season opener on April 21.
Best known for his "kind, caring, hopeful and brave personality," Conway has a track record of coming up clutch for his team with his phenomenal hustle and fabulous hands.
Coach Sami Mantere says Conway has been on his radar for years.
"I've watched a lot of film on him," says Mantere. "He has a knack for coming through with the big shot when it matters most."
Adrenaline fans will be excited to see Conway's presence in the line-up in 2018 before he signs with Newcastle and/or CBR in future seasons.
The club has struggled in recent times in the shootout, but Conway says that is his specialty.
"There was a state championship once at home and the coach asked me to take the final shot," he says. "I was reluctant at first but my coach told me that win or lose he would be proud of me no matter what. This is the attitude I take when put important situations and I will bring that to Adelaide."
Conway has also represented his country at one of the highest possible levels where he displayed ultimate selflessness - a trait that will be cherished in the Adrenaline this season.
In an intense Gold Medal game vs. Iceland, Conway relinquished his spot from the roster so his teammate would not miss out. He took a spot on the bench and helped coach the team to a win.
"I can really see Charlie being an asset on the coaching side of things," says Mantere. "He has experience like no other. I'm from Finland so I am quite familiar with the workings of the powerful Iceland hockey team so his performance vs. them certainly caught my eye."
When asked about if he would be able to adapt to the unique Australian Ice Hockey style, Conway said "no problem."
"I've been playing on teams with a bunch of different characters and misfits for years. There was one player on my team who had a unique shot called the Knuckle Puck. Goalies really struggled with it so I just tried to get him the puck," he says.
"I've seen some footage of Josef Rezek who has an amazing shot. I think we could be good line mates."
