Post-Game Recap: Score doesn't tell full picture in tight loss to Stangs

Post-Game Recap: Score doesn't tell full picture in tight loss to Stangs

Amanda Marasigan

The Adelaide Adrenaline are in Melbourne for their last away games to face the Mustangs and old rivals Ice.

The Melbourne Mustangs have clinched a playoff spot, leading in the Hellyer Conference with a 15-6-2 record.

Adelaide and the Mustangs have not gone head-to-head this season.

Melbourne’s highly skilled imports tested Adelaide’s defense the full 60-minutes, but the final score did not reflect how close the game was.

Former NHL players Scott Timmins and Ty Wishart, along with Christopher Lawrence are in the top 10 scoring leaders in the league. Wishart notably being drafted 16th overall in 2006.

Notably, Steve Best also played his 150th AIHL game, a long-time loyal of the Adrenaline.

Adelaide kept it close in the first period, ending twenty minutes with the Mustangs only leading by one goal.

Adelaide struggled to clear the zone early and some giveaways to Melbourne kept Matus Trnka busy.

This is the second game in a row wherein Trnka started in net and he continued to maintain Adelaide’s momentum.

Scott Timmins continued his goal-scoring streak with an angled shot off a pass from Chris Lawrence at the 15:39 mark.

Adelaide-born Seb Wooodlands was in net for the Mustangs and had a quick glove all night.

As usual, Melbourne utilised the extra space of the Olympic-sized ice rink with their elite passing and position.

A big save was made by Trnka when he denied the league’s leading goal scorer, Scott Timmins’s on a breakaway – putting the entire arena on the edge of their seat.

Adelaide had to make sure that loose pucks were cleared in front of the net, with Melbourne’s top scorers regularly planting themselves in the slot.

Adelaide levelled up the score in the second period, but Melbourne kept the lead once again.

Three minutes into the period, Daniel Chen tipped it in five-hole off an initial Noah Maley shot.

Captain Joey MacDougall had a standout period in defence, breaking up a number of developing Mustangs plays.

Noah Maley headed to the penalty box with six minutes left.

A minute later, blue-liner Ty Wishart got the pass from Scott Timmins to put it in the net on the powerplay.

Adelaide got the 5-on-3 advantage but Melbourne was able to kill it.

Mustangs finished the second period leading 2-1.

Brett Radford received a roughing penalty late in the second period causing Adelaide to skate in the third period one man down.

Adelaide was able to move the puck forward well in the third but were unable to capitalise on several opportunities.

At 12:36, Ryan Ruddle received an elbowing penalty.

Nathaniel Benson took this opportunity to tie the game once he got the puck from the face-off.

It was a tight game between the two teams. The scores were levelled up until the seven-minute mark.

With the man advantage, back-to-back goals were scored by Jack Carpenter and Chris Lawrence, extending Melbourne’s lead to 4-2.

On the final 90 seconds, Bradley Apps earned Melbourne’s fifth goal of the game.

Adelaide had a close chance to win the game but fell short towards the end. They outshot Melbourne 36-31.

Adelaide just couldn’t make the full 60 minutes against the cup contending Melbourne team.

Matus Trnka continued to have a huge impact, even earning the Mustangs chosen second star of the game.

The two teams face each other once again in two weeks at Adelaide’s IceArena for their last game of the season.

Adelaide will be back at the O’Brien IceHouse tomorrow to skate against their historical rival Melbourne Ice.
