Post-Game Recap: Adelaide celebrates Canada Day against Perth Thunder

Post-Game Recap: Adelaide celebrates Canada Day against Perth Thunder

Amanda Marasigan

Adelaide clashed with Perth on Saturday, taking the first goal and staying in the game until a short defensive lapse, in which the strong Thunder made them pay.

Happy Canada Day! On the 1st of July, Adelaide faced Perth wearing their special edition red jersey in support of the Northern holiday.

Adelaide has been desperately battling for a play-off spot since the team made a reset a few weeks ago.

They still have a few key things to improve on but there has been a notable difference from their games when comparing their start of the season to now.

Adelaide came in on a three-game losing streak, their last victory against the Brisbane Lightning two weeks ago, a shutout 4-0 win.

Perth is loaded with star players Jamie Woodman, arguably Australia’s top defenseman, Riley Langille, an experienced young local player, and import Connor Jean, a key playmaker who consistently feeds the puck to his teammates.

Perth stands third in the Hellyer Conference while Adelaide still sits fourth in the Rurak Conference.

The first period was a low-scoring affair with a few penalties from both teams.

Trnka started in net for Adelaide, holding a .861 save percentage while Perth played Canadian import Kristian Stead to defend their net.

Two minutes into the period, Brett Radford opened the scoring to put Adelaide in the lead – this was the only goal scored this period. This goal extended his scoring streak to 6 games.

Both teams struggled to stay out of the penalty box for the last 11 minutes of the period with back-to-back penalties.

Trnka in net made spectacular saves, denying all shots against him.

It was strong start for Adelaide, ending it with a 1-0 lead.

Adrenaline players such as Brett Radford, Julian Friederich, Ben Handberg, and Daniel O’Handley made huge impacts on the second period.

Radford entered the period with quick shots against Kristian Stead, but the goalie was quick to shut the gates.

At 17:01, Adelaide defenseman Zach Boyle tried to tangle up Connor Jean but Perth levelled the score to make it a 1-1 game.

A scoring opportunity came Adelaide’s way when Daniel Chen dangled through four Thunder players but unfortunately, he couldn’t finish it off.

The second period was an even period for both teams with the scores tied 1-1 to finish.

Perth upped the physicality, playing smart hockey and controlled the last five minutes of the period.

The third period was going to be a big period for both teams as they attempted to get their team on the scoresheet.

Adelaide’s struggled to play defensively against Perth during the third period. They were unable to capitalise, leading to chaos.

Back-to-back goals by Kieran Webster at the 17:47 and 15:46 mark put Perth in a two-goal lead.

With Perth leading 3-1, Adelaide needed to change the momentum. They needed stronger puck support while their defense continued to break down.

Trnka played the puck forward, coming out of his net but Andrew Cox intercepted the puck to put it into the empty net behind them, potting a shorthanded goal.

Perth extended their lead to 5-1 when Connor Jean got the puck past Trnka once again with 10 minutes left in the game.

After facing 28 shots, Trnka was pulled out with Jeremy Friederich taking his place in net.

Radford answered back to Perth’s goal by slowly rolling the puck in behind the out of position goaltender. 5-2, Perth still leading.

Perth was quick to respond to this when Connor Jean got his third goal of the game from a Riley Langille centring pass.

It was a tough game for Adelaide going against a team consisting of highly skilled players and an import goalie.

The third period was a high-scoring period as both teams chased down the score sheet.

Adelaide was hoping to keep the game close but was unable to keep it together, while much of the game was a great sign for Adelaide against a strong Perth team, they need to tighten up their lapses to decrease the impact.

The Adelaide Adrenaline heads to Canberra next week playing a double-header against the CBR Brave.
