Post-Game Recap: High scoring affair against Northstars ends in loss

Post-Game Recap: High scoring affair against Northstars ends in loss

Amanda Marasigan

The Adelaide Adrenaline entered a double-header weekend against the Newcastle Northstars with a 9-5 loss.

The two teams have gone head-to-head twice in Newcastle’s home barn.

Adelaide fell short in the last 15 minutes in their first meeting, causing a 5-6 loss in a close game.  Adelaide was leading by two goals early in the third period, but Newcastle scored three additional goals to put them up by the end of the game.

The second game was not as close.

Adelaide has loaded their line-up with three imports, Coy Prevost, Brett Radford, and Connor Vermeulen.

Out for Adelaide – Jake Hazel, Tyler Leeming, Jordan Freeman, Jared Siemens, and Brett Thompson.

Jeremy Friederich started in net for Adelaide. He fought hard against the CBR Brave last week, facing over 40 shots.

The first period was totally controlled by Newcastle. They dominated the offensive zone while Adelaide couldn’t quite get their sticks on the puck.

Start of the period, Adelaide struggled to get the puck out of the zone, leaving Friederich feeling the pressure.

Adrenaline player Nathaniel Benson made a big impact on Adelaide’s defense.

Newcastle got the two-goal lead with Riley Klugerman and Patrick Ward making the scoresheet.

They had numerous scoring opportunities, having 20 shots on goal in the first period.

Klugerman nearly scored again, but Morris O’Handley tangled him up to deny the breakaway.

Shane Southwood took a two-minute trip to the penalty box for a tripping call which led to a powerplay goal by Brett Radford, making no mistake off a highlight reel backhand saucer pass from Prevost.

Quickly after, Coy Prevost tied the game 2-2 as he skated down the centre of the ice all alone when he got the breakaway pass from Steve Best.

The last minute of the first period saw Newcastle putting another three goals on the board. Back-to-back goals were scored by Daniel Berno, Wehebe Darge, and Klugerman.

Adelaide came into the second period as a more structured team.

After facing 20 shots, Friederich was given a break and Matus Trnka stepped in net.

Daniel Chen had several offensive opportunities, but struggled to get the puck past Northstars goalie, Charlie Smart.

Trnka played the puck and made some big saves to keep Adelaide in the game.

Newcastle extended their lead 7-2, the two goals scored by Berno and Francis Drolet.

Adelaide continued to play tightly despite the five-goal difference.

It was a big period for Trnka as he faced 15 shots. He came onto the third period ready to defend a push.

Both teams capitalised on the third period, but Newcastle still maintained the lead.

Ben Handberg, Joey MacDougall, and Julian Friederich earned some hardworking goals, but Tanner Butler and Liam Manwarring kept Newcastle in the far lead.

Trnka was tested by Newcastle shot after shot. It was an Adelaide all-team effort to play defensively but the 18-year-old goalie was the biggest impact.

Right from the second period, he made much-needed saves – facing over 30 shots.

Adelaide faces Newcastle again tomorrow.

Adelaide has to shut down Newcastle’s top players, Klugerman, Berno, and Drolet to support the goalie in net.
