Post-Game Recap: Split weekend for the Adrenaline at home vs. Brisbane

Post-Game Recap: Split weekend for the Adrenaline at home vs. Brisbane

Amanda Marasigan

Adelaide Adrenaline split the weekend in a close Game 2 against Brisbane Lightning.

The Adelaide Adrenaline’s Saturday 4-0 win against gave them the momentum they needed for the game but unfortunately fell short during the at the end of the third period.

It was a big game for the team in the race for the playoffs, and an even bigger game for Matus Trnka – starting for the second night in a row to back up his shutout performance on Saturday.

Notable outs, Daniel Chen, Jared Siemens, Joey MacDougall, and Jake Hazel due to injuries.

Nick Novysedlak was starting in net for Brisbane, relieving after Steve Harris’s performance on Saturday.

It was a tight first period with a notable difference in Brisbane’s play. They were more reformed and were desperate to get ahead early

Coy Prevost took a tripping penalty early into the game. Similar to last night’s game, Daniel O’Handley kept the pressure on Brisbane through with some time on the penalty kill.

Noah Maley was also standout on the kill, as is usual.

Adelaide’s game sense has been shaping them into a stronger team, breakout passes have improved and awareness with the puck has been better.

At 9:14, Julian Fodor opened the scoring, getting the puck past Trnka with a point shot.

Five minutes later, import Brett Radford put it in the net to get Adelaide’s first goal of the game.

On the last minute of the period, Adelaide’s defense was tested, with Trnka facing an number of shots. They struggled to get the puck to the middle, letting Brisbane keep it around the edges of the zone.

Adelaide and Brisbane ended the first period tied 1-1, but Brisbane quickly responded right off next puck drop.

30 seconds into the second period, Kasey Kulczycki scored Brisbane’s second goal, the assists going to Eric Speedie and Alexis Girard.

Adelaide’s work on the boards has shown great improvement, supporting each other to come out with more possession of the puck.

Adelaide’s youngest player, Julian Friederich, skated for the puck once dumped in and won the 1-on-1 battle to get possession.

Zach Boyle a shot from the blue line and scored from Prevost. The score tied 2-2.

Adelaide struggled to clear the zone which led to Brisbane’s third goal. It was unexpected from Trnka’s end as the puck just slid in from a shot taken at the side of the net by Patrik Popovics. 2-3

At 7:21, a possible break opportunity was presented to Radford but was tripped by Mikko Rippon, for which he got two minutes.

Prevost’s tangled up a player to let Boyle pick up the puck, sending it to Adelaide’s offensive zone.

Prevost’s play for the turnover allowed him to score with six minutes left on the period, redirecting it into the Brisbane net off a Radford feed, 3-3 the score.

At the 30-second mark, Benson got sent to the box for a holding penalty.

Brisbane with the man advantage scored a goal with Girard getting the goal four seconds into the powerplay.

The period came to an end with Brisbane’s 4-3 lead.

Not even two minutes into the period, Benson pulled a rebound in front of the net to tie the game 4-4.

Adelaide set up some nice plays to keep the puck in the zone, a massive contribution from the defence.

A delay of game penalty was called on Zach Steele sending Adelaide on a penalty kill. They made sure to clear the zone with Trnka making huge saves to keep the team in line.

Ben Handberg showed his physicality all game, using his body effectively to separate players from the puck.

Connor Vermeulen went down to make a huge block on a shot taken by Brisbane – a much-needed save by the defenceman.

On the 10-minute mark, Kulczycki put Brisbane to the 5-4 lead getting the puck bardown in Trnka’s net.

It was still a close game at this point and Adelaide was hopeful to tie the game with ten minutes left.

However, Popovics widened the score to put Brisbane 6-4, assisted by Neil Pretorius and Harley Anderson on a breakaway.

Adelaide did everything they can to close the gap – including pulling the goalie – but they struggled to get shots on goal.

To seal the score sheet, Arum Rupchuk scored an empty netter with 14 seconds left.

It was a tough game for Adelaide but it’s hard to deny that they look like a new team.

The Adelaide Adrenaline will head to New South Wales next weekend for a game against the Sydney Ice Dogs and Newcastle Northstars.
