Road-trip Preview: Adrenaline @ Bears & Northstars Jun 3 & 4

Road-trip Preview: Adrenaline @ Bears & Northstars Jun 3 & 4

Hugh Whittle

The Adrenaline hit the road this weekend for a two city road trip, looking to bounce back from a demoralising defeat to the Melbourne Ice last Saturday. They will face the Bears on Saturday for the last time this season, and then division members Newcastle Northstars for the first of four meetings.

The Bears appear to be the "team to beat" in the league right now, with an impressive 9 & 1 record, however it is Newcastle that holds the only victory over them this season, taking a tight 3-2 win in April. Import Ace Cowans continues to be an ace, 21 points in 10 games, with Thomas Steven sitting just above him with 22 points. Those two players make up for a large amount of goal scoring, a definite target to suppress if the Adrenaline want to stay ahead. They have also just signed a trio of players, including one of Adelaide's PHL rivals Hayden Dawes joining the squad, likely bringing some more goal scoring potential along with him. The Adelaide locals that faced him last year need to trust that they know how to shut Dawes down, as they did in the PHL finals.

The Northstars have started to find their pace after a slow start to the season, mostly due to a number of players absent with national team duties, and late arrivals of imports. Speaking of those imports, they hold just under half of all recorded points by the team this season, with Daniel Berno and Josh Adkins personally combining for 36 points. They've won five out of their last six games. They're hot, and they're a strong team, having gone to the Goodall Cup final last year to fall against the CBR Brave. Former Adelaide star Wehebe Darge made the jump to the Northstars from their cup final rival in the offseason, however he doesn't appear to have played since early May, if he's in the game, he can be lethal.

In the Adrenaline camp, they've had a rough start to the season to say the least. some close losses, and some not so close losses, leave them one up from the bottom of the Rurak conference ladder. With star import Darcy Walsh having just left the team due to injury, they are desperate for some possible reinforcements. However, they need to keep their heads in the moment and hopefully rack up some points to get started climbing up the ladder. Andrew Chen notably scored two goals in Saturday's game, possibly opening the door for an offensive streak that we haven't seen from him in his career yet. The other Andrew, of the Hamilton kind, continues to be Adelaide's main scorer, sitting on 8 for the season so far. He has a knack for finding the back of the net, and has also injected some physical presence into the team with his high stature.

It's hard to know what to expect after last Saturday's game, but the Adrenaline boys need to have a short memory. Outworking the opponent is crucial. These are two extremely skilled teams, and you can't let them walk on top of you. Winning puck battles, races, making simple plays, and dominating the front of both nets to absolutely crucial. The Adrenaline will need to implement a strong work ethic if they want to bring home some points.
