Post-Game Recap: Adelaide fall in closer game than score would suggest

Post-Game Recap: Adelaide fall in closer game than score would suggest

Amanda Marasigan

The Adelaide Adrenaline took a 5-2 loss to close the double-header weekend against the Newcastle Northstars.

Saturday’s match-up resulted in Newcastle’s 9-5 win. Although the score doesn’t suggest it, Adelaide held a lot of the momentum from the start of the second period, but the gap was too far.

Newcastle has strong depth throughout the lineup from top to bottom and Adelaide’s defence had to match it to shut them down.

Matus Trnka was big in net on Saturday and after his spectacular performance, he started between the posts for game 2.

It was a tight first period. Both goalies faced a similar number of shots but Newcastle still outshot Adelaide by a small margin.

The period started with Adelaide controlling much of the play in their offensive zone to keep Newcastle goaltender Charlie Smart busy.

At 16:07, Joey MacDougall and Josh Adkins headed to the penalty box for matching roughing penalties.

Both teams skated 4-on-4 for the next two minutes.

10 seconds into the 4-on-4, the Souris, Manitoba import Tanner Butler scored off the post to put Newcastle in the lead.

When in their defensive zone, Adelaide kept the one-on-one battles tight and slowed the play to control the game. They managed a number of successful breakouts.

At the 11:59 mark, a great play by Ben Handberg got the puck into the slot, where Nathaniel Benson tied the game 1-1 with a clean shot.

More penalties came in the way but both teams were able to kill it off.

Newcastle blew open their lead with three more goals in the second period. Adelaide was unable to score.

Rookies Noah Maley and Julian Friederich had a standout period in the corners.

Adelaide’s defence struggled throughout the period, leaving the blue line open for Newcastle to work their efficient breakout.

This led to goals being scored by Berno, Klugerman, and former Adelaide player Wehebe Darge.

Newcastle put Trnka to work in net. He continued to play his part, even denying a big breakaway by Berno.

End of second period, Newcastle leading 4-1.

Adelaide could’ve sealed the gap in the third period, but some undisciplined play in the dying minutes put Newcastle on a 5-on-3 to extend their lead.

Two minutes into the period, Coy Prevost made a centring pass to Brett Radford, who tapped in a powerplay goal to make it a 4-2 game.

Trnka put in all his effort to keep Adelaide in the game. the volume of shots he faced keeping him scrambling in the net.

They were hoping to catch Newcastle but with Benson and Vermeulen in the box, Adelaide skated two men down.

With no way for Adelaide to stop the bleeding, Berno made no mistake and forced in a powerplay goal, putting Newcastle at a three-goal lead.

It was a close third period for the most part, but unfortunate penalties made it too far for Adelaide. Trnka faced over 40 shots and was a standout for Adelaide once again.

Final score, 5-2 in favour of Newcastle

Adelaide gets the next weekend off and heads to Melbourne in two weeks to skate against the Mustangs and the Ice.
