Post-Game Recap: Adrenaline show future with commanding win over Mustangs

Post-Game Recap: Adrenaline show future with commanding win over Mustangs

Amanda Marasigan

The Adelaide Adrenaline finished the season on a roaring high with a 5-2 win against the Melbourne Mustangs.

The two teams faced each other in a tight game just two weeks ago in Melbourne.

Adelaide tied the score in the third period, but they couldn’t maintain it, leading to three goals by Melbourne in the last seven minutes of the game.

Adelaide’s defence stepped up across the roster.

For the first period Adelaide played exceptionally well by reading the plays, keeping the puck in the offensive zone with good positioning.

Brenden McDowell scored right off the draw 13 seconds into the game to get Melbourne in an early lead, not the start Adelaide wanted at all, but it would not write the rest of the game.

Adelaide born Mustangs goalie Seb Woodlands denied shots as the Adrenaline lay on the scoring opportunities.

Melbourne’s passing was up to their usual high standard across the first period.

Matus Trnka made his presence known, starting in net and standing tall for Adelaide despite the early goal he faced.

Adelaide made several good defensive plays as the puck was loose in front of Trnka, making sure to clear the zone.

A 5-on-3 in Adelaide’s favour at the ten-minute mark led to Brett Radford tying the game 1-1.

It was a low scoring period, but Adelaide got the managed to push ahead during the second period.

Birthday boy Coy Prevost kept up his usual high-octane offence, contributing to Adelaide’s momentum push.

Trnka played the puck well and picked it up to pass it to his teammates.

Connor Vermeulen looked incredibly confident with the puck, brushing off Mustangs players during breakout attempts.

Adelaide had many close goal opportunities, but Woodlands’ glove was too quick.

At 6:01, Jared Siemens made a centring pass for Joey MacDougall, who lobbed it over the netminders shoulder like a shot from a sand wedge.

However, Melbourne responded to this a minute later when Vadim Virjassov skated all alone and levelled the score 2-2.

Adelaide continued to skate with full effort to prevent Melbourne from getting ahead.

With seven seconds left on the period, Prevost scored the go-ahead goal and ended the second period with Adelaide leading 3-2.

Adelaide worked together in a full team effort to gain control of the third period.

They had the lead over Melbourne. All they had to do was maintain it.

They stayed out of the penalty box to avoid the usual late game penalty kills.

Prevost extended Adelaide’s lead even more.

At 7:41, he put the puck top-shelf off a Melbourne stick deflection to give Adelaide the confidence they needed to hold the 4-2 score.

Melbourne pulled the goalie for the man advantage, but it led to Prevost’s third goal – earning a hattrick for his birthday.

Adelaide struggled to string together a full 60 minutes of hockey all season, but the possibilities of a young team came together to bring a huge 5-2 against the cup contending Mustangs.

It’s been a rollercoaster of a season for the Adrenaline – they shifted players around, faced tough losses, celebrated a few victorious wins, and with this final game of the season, they showed their perseverance and drive until the very end.
