Road-trip Preview: Adelaide Adrenaline @ Central Coast Rhinos April 29 & 30

Road-trip Preview: Adelaide Adrenaline @ Central Coast Rhinos April 29 & 30

Hugh Whittle

If you missed the game on the weekend, catch up with the recap here: https://bit.ly/3H2k9kk

The Adrenaline make the trek to the Central Coast this weekend to face the Rhinos in Erina Ice Arena, it is the first double-header of the season for Adelaide. A returning team apart of this years AIHL expansion, the Rhinos are yet to win a game this season going 0-4 so far. Another expansion team, the Brisbane Lightning, have become their worst nightmare, scoring 38 goals on them and allowing 0 in 3 games.

On the other side, the Adrenaline are also yet to win a game, however they have only played 2 games compared to 4, and have not been shutout. They faced the Sydney Bears in a tough battle on the weekend, scoring 3 goals in the first 10 minutes but ultimately falling 3-6. Both teams are clearly anxious to get their first win out of the way.

Adrenaline notes:
  • They have scored 5 goals in 120 total minutes of play, but have allowed 12.
  • Andrew Hamilton has scored 3/5 goals this season.
  • Other Canadian import Darcy Walsh tallied a number of high danger chances last weekend, it’s only a matter of time until he gets on the board.
  • Proven goal scorers like Nathaniel Benson and Daniel Chen are also yet to light the lamp.
Rhinos notes:
  • They currently hold the worst team stats in the league by a mile, with a -40 goal differential and 10.75 goals against average per game.
  • Of the 3 goals they have scored, 2 of them have been on the power play.
  • 4 of their players hold a point, 2 hold a goal and 2 an assist.
  • Both goaltenders that have played so far have a goals against average above 9, there is not much light to shine on the numbers.
Adrenaline keys to victory:
  1. Come with a killer instinct. It would be easy for the Adrenaline to roll into Erina expecting 2 wins this weekend, but they have to remember that they haven’t won a game either. While the Rhino’s have had some hard outings to say the least, they also held their ground against the defending cup champions CBR Brave. The sample size is simply not big enough to rule that out as an anomaly.
  2. Expect reinforcements. Rumours say that the Rhino’s will be receiving a shipload of players for this weekend. NHSL champion Xander Wardlaw is likely to be present along with most of their import roster, including a goalie. However, it is possible that Team Australia captain Bert Malloy may still be overseas following the IIHF worlds. The Adrenaline must come prepared for a totally different team.
  3. Own the net. The Sydney Bears dominated the front of both nets last weekend, it allowed them to get pucks through traffic and keep high danger scoring chances away from their net. The Adrenaline simply need to be better in this regard if they want to be successful. Physicality is extremely important, the controllables need to be controlled.
  4. Be confident in the special teams. The special teams showed a noticeable improvement against the Bears compared the the season opener, however, the main priority should be staying out of the box. A slew of minor penalties kept the Adrenaline’s momentum stagnant for much of the game, and if the Bears hadn’t scored twice on the power play, we may have been left with a much tighter game.
Players to watch:
  • Andrew Hamilton: While the sample size is small, numbers usually don’t lie. The 6’4” Canadian import currently makes up for 3/5ths of the Adrenaline scoring, he is quickly building a reputation as a sniper, expect him to come out big this weekend.
  • Darcy Walsh: Once again, the hyper-skilled Canadian forward teased the Adrenaline fans with high grade chance after chance. If there’s any oppurtunity to get the monkey off the back, this weekend is it.
  • Daniel Chen: The smooth skating local has proven himself as the kind of player than can put in the hard yards shift after shift. Watch for his exemplary movement through the neutral zone and work in the corners.
  • Zach Boyle: The 2019 Adrenaline defenseman of the year has a proven track record of offensive production. Another hot stick yet to score, if the Adrenaline can get heavy traffic infront of the net, expect him to find the back of the net from the point.
Both games will be available to stream on aihl.tv at 3:00pm Adelaide time on Saturday and Sunday.
