Adelaide Adrenaline VS Newcastle Northstars Game Recap - Sunday 7th July
Monday, July 8, 2024 - Submitted by Joanna Gruenberg
Sunday’s game against the Newcastle Northstars was an aggressive, fast paced game that ended in a penalty shootout to decide the winner.

The Adrenaline put offensive pressure onto the conference leaders right out the gate, steadily getting their shots on goal up and forcing the Northstars to stay on defence for much of the first period. Rylan Toth was in his element, smoothly stopping any stray pucks and a couple of breakaway shots when the Northstars were able to enter the zone. A wristshot from Josh Adkins went off the crossbar and starting goaltender Charles Smart robbed both Daniel Chen and Ty Wright with quick glove saves. However, the Adrenaline were rewarded for their efforts as the period wound down when Shaun Dosanjh scored the game’s opening goal from a faceoff win in the offensive zone from Adkins.

Northstars top point producers Francis Drolet and Daniel Berno were having trouble finding the net, and Joey MacDougall says when facing a team who has a lot of great shooters it’s important to take away scoring chances as much as possible:

“It’s not always what you do when you have the puck, it’s how you control the game when you don’t have the puck,” MacDougall explains. “We’ve been really focusing on shutting down the middle of the ice and taking away those high percentage scoring areas and make them shoot from more uncomfortable spots outside.”

The Adrenaline continued to control most plays in the second period with Marcel McGuiness and Ty Wright putting speed behind them as they pushed the puck up the ice and drove the Northstars towards the boards. With puck possession equal among both teams, Alexander Yuill took advantage of a rare piece of open net behind Toth and tied the game. The Adrenaline weren’t rattled by this as we saw each line take the time to carefully set each other up and take meaningful shots towards Smart. Clearly frustrated at how the game was progressing, the Northstars began to play with risky behaviour including Toth being bowled over by Sean Oultram. Remy McGuiness quickly came to his defence and both players were awarded five minute penalties for fighting and each a single game misconduct.

Kaden Elder was waiting in front of the net to get his 20th goal of the season as he took a rebound shot from Adkins and put the Adrenaline up 2-1 in the third period. With less than a minute remaining, the Northstars chose the option of an empty net and Kyler Matthews was able to push the game into overtime.
The Northstars celebrations would be short lived as the three-on-three overtime led to a penalty shootout, with Toth stopping both attempts and Adkins and Elder each scoring a goal to deliver a huge 3-2 win for the Adrenaline.

“It’s great for us to come out of the weekend with three points against the top team in our division,” MacDougall says. “It shows how far we’ve come this season and we’ve got a lot more to show.”

Indeed, the Adrenaline will be taking this energy with them to Newcastle on Saturday as they play a rubber match against the Northstars and look to capture more playoff points. Puck drop is at 5:00pm so be sure to tune into AIHL.tv to catch all the action.
