| Post-game Recap: Adrenaline leave Brisbane after tough double-header |

The Adelaide Adrenaline returned to Boondall Ice World in Queensland for their second game of a double-header against the Brisbane Lightning. Adelaide suffered a tough defeat last night at the hands of the penalty box, conceding 6 power-play goals. They made some good play, especially in the second period, however there is only so much that can be done when you spend a third of the game on the penalty-kill. A more disciplined game needed, with more consistent offensive setup. On the other side, the Lightning were looking to continue their onslaught of goal scoring, with 8 goals scored total last night, 3 in the last 5 minutes. As has become routine, Matus Trnka started in net for Adelaide, with Brisbane opting for 5 team AIHL veteran Nicholas Novysedlak. With the game underway, a delayed penalty against the Lightning came 1 minute in. An elbow from Neil Pretorius put the Adrenaline up for a chance at an early difference. The Adrenaline made one or two opportunities but were generally unable to set up. 5 minutes into the game, and the Lightning had yet to record a shot on net, a strong forecheck by Adelaide was proving successful but they had to start generating more offence to make it matter. They recorded their first shot with a lucky break for Harley Anderson, Zach Steele managed to break it up but took a hooking penalty in the process, the Adrenaline would go onto the penalty-kill that would cause them so much pain last night. A lack of control in front of the net would get the Lightning on the board during the ensuing power-play. With a tough goal trickling in from Anthony Barnes. The Adrenaline would go straight back on the power-play after the goal to try and even the score, already recording as many man advantage opportunities that they had yesterday. A struggling powerplay with some shot attempts that couldn’t get on net would end in disaster as Aaron Wanat jumped on a breakaway and sunk it top shelf shortly after the penalty expired. 0-2 to the Lightning with 10 minutes to play. Not the start the Adrenaline wanted or needed. Yet with 5 minutes left, the Adrenaline earned another power-play, however with an undisciplined slash it was back to 4 on 4 before Adelaide could enter the offensive zone. They would be stuck in the defensive zone for the entirety of the 2 minutes. The Lightning defence was causing trouble all period, jumping up into the play and hounding in the corners of their zone. On the positive side, the Adrenaline forecheck was strong but unfortunately couldn’t generate much in reward. Moving into the second period, the Adrenaline had to get more shots on goal. 2-3 shots in a period was not going to make much happen. A snapshot off the post was a better sign for the Adrenaline offense early in the second period. Seconds later the luck would go in Adelaide’s favour, an attempted pass by Tyler Leeming would bank off the defenceman’s skate and into the net, now a one goal game, the Adrenaline needed to put the foot on the gas and push the momentum. It was clear out of the gate, the Adrenaline had pushed up the physicality, some strong words by Head Coach Stu Henly likely put across during the period break. A heroic block by Andrew Hamilton would fire up the Adrenaline bench, followed by a huge backdoor save by Trnka. Individuals were stepping up for big plays and the team was starting to feed off the energy. However, it was the Lightning that would claim the momentum, some in and out zone time featured another big save by Trnka after a broken play. Yet, the Adrenaline’s old friend the hooking penalty would show its face once more. The Lightning would seemingly score immediately, although it was waved off for goaltender interference. Another face-off in the zone would result in a scramble in front of the net, with Jared Siemens helmet being ripped off. 4 on 4 ensued after an unsportsmanlike conduct call. A 1-minute power-play followed for the Adrenaline, unable to generate much offence. A slight scare for the Adrenaline as Trnka took a shot to the mask, immediately falling to the ice. Luckily, he got to his feet quickly, likely with some ringing ears. The Adrenaline followed with some S tier chances, a 2 on 0 break couldn’t reach the back of the net, within a minute Julian Friederich would earn a breakaway that he couldn’t sink, taking an uncalled cross-check in the back after the whistle. The lucky bounces would go in the Lightning’s favour soon afterwards, making an awkward bounce and ending up on the stick of the man right in front of Trnka, who sent it to the back of the net. 1-3. Adelaide had generated several opportunities, but with a lack of goals for, and now another against, the game was quickly walking away from them. It walked further away indeed. In routine for this weekend, a delayed penalty against the Adrenaline would get another Brisbane man on the ice, where they scored yet another goal with the man advantage. 1-4 the score going into the third period. A rip from Hamilton would go bar down and out to start the third, an unlucky break for the Canadian import trying to continue his scoring streak. Still, it would finally find the net, a disastrous turnover on the blue-line would get Daniel Chen into the zone, who fed it to Zach Steele, sending a wrist-shot past the glove of Novysedlak for his third of the season. 2-4 the score. Andrew Chen followed up with 2 consecutive shots, both blocked by Max Roth. The Adrenaline appeared to be generating some great pressure, with the Lightning making some equal push back. If Adelaide could get the next goal, they had a chance. The chance came with power-play opportunity for the Adrenaline, funnily enough it was Lachlan Tripp… for tripping. Once again, the special teams curse came around, a misread drop pass led to a break for import Alexis Girard who would slide a short-handed goal five-hole to make it 2-5. Reeling from the damage, the Adrenaline would earn yet another power-play, a vital opportunity to stay in the game, Stu Henly loudly stressing the importance of getting pucks on net. Like a broken record. Clear frustration from the Adrenaline nullified the power-play 30 seconds in with a boarding call. The last frame of the game was back and forth, a series of broken plays resulted in some strong opportunities each way, Ryan Foll notably earning a shot from right in front of the net that went high. Too little too late. Final score: 2-5 for the Lightning Adelaide Adrenaline shots on goal: 19 (2-8-9) Brisbane Lightning shots on goal: 31 (9-12-10) Adrenaline 0 for 7 on the power-play. 12 penalty minutes Lightning 1 for 4 on the power-play. 18 penalty minutes The Adrenaline return home, disappointed to bring no points with them. A much tighter game played today by the squad with some legitimate chances, but unfortunately not enough. Some frustration clearly following, they will have to keep their heads up and have a short memory. The absence of Walsh, Best, and Benson was felt, they will be eagerly awaiting their return. Sadly, the tough numbers cannot be ignored. The special teams all weekend were less an ideal, for lack of a better phrase. While the Adrenaline had more power-plays today, they were 0 for 7, including a short-handed goal against. The penalty-kill was marginally better but still went 1 for 4 with a goal scored against on a delayed penalty as well. Not to mention the 6 goals against yesterday on the PK. In a positive view, hopefully this is a blip on the map and a replenished home squad can turn it around. The team needs to start at least splitting double-header weekends into the season to stay up the standings. In some good signs for the youth, Julian Friederich picked up another point today, now holding 4 in 5 games. Hopefully he can continue his trajectory along with the other young members of the team.
