When the Australian Ice Hockey League season finishes, the National Hockey League begins in North America. The best players in the world compete for the ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup. For the Adrenaline players, the ultimate prize is the Goodall Cup, first awarded in 1911 for the winners of an interstate competition between NSW and Victoria. Despite the result in 2019, there’s one thing every Adrenaline player will tell you, the thought of holding the cup is what motivates them. In part 2 of our “Where The Puck Are They?” series, we investigate what players Steve Best and Zach Boyle have been up to during the break and in preparation for the 2020 season.
Part 2 of our “Where The Puck Are They” series focuses on Steve Best and Zach Boyle.
For veteran player and fan favourite Steve Best, hockey isn’t just played on ice. As he has done for several years, Steve represented South Australia in the National Inline Championships, where he finished with 7 points (4g, 3a) in 3 games. While South Australia finished fourth, his individual performance highlighted the effort he has put in to continue competing amongst the best at the highest level. Outside of hockey Steve has been working hard in the gym, beginning his preseason conditioning well before the team returned to training in late January.
When asked about the 2020 season Steve was extremely positive with where the team is at; “I’m really excited to see how the season will play out, especially considering all the hard work that the team has put in over the summer and since we started preseason training. We are a very young team which can be tough, but we are returning to the ice with a new attitude and commitment to be the best we can be”
Steve would like to thank sponsor Manuel Carpentry for supporting him in 2019 and their willingness to continue in 2020.
Hockey isn’t just a sport that defenceman Zach Boyle plays, but something he lives and breathes every single day of the year. When not at the rink, Zach can be found working at local hockey shop and long-time team sponsor Power Play Sports. Here he is an expert on all things hockey gear, skate sharpening and is the go to guy for getting skates fitted.
When the 2019 season finished, Zach travelled with the Australian Senior Men’s team to New Zealand to compete in a 3-game series. Getting to play at that level is an amazing achievement and one that Zach didn’t take lightly; “While the result didn’t go the way the team wanted, it was great to get an opportunity to test myself against the best New Zealand have to offer, while getting to play amongst some of the best skaters in the AIHL”.
Away from the rink Zach was also able to enjoy a cruise with partner and Adelaide Rush player Tiffany Venning, through Vanuatu and New Caledonia. It gave him a good chance to relax and take a break from the sport in preparation for the 2020 season, which he has expressed his anticipation for; “I can’t wait to get back on the ice with the Adrenaline this season. I’ve been on the team for a few years now and while it’s been tough, I think we are on the right track for big improvement. The Adrenaline crowd is the best in the league and I’m excited to show them what we have been working on”.
Zach would like to thank Graeme and Benny from Power Play Sports for sponsoring both him and the team.
