Post-game Recap: Barn-burner edged out by Sydney Ice Dogs at home
Friday, May 12, 2023 - Submitted by Amanda Marasigan, contributions by Hugh Whittle
The Adelaide Adrenaline entered their second home game of the season tonight with a 2 win, 4 loss record. Facing up against the Sydney Ice Dogs, holding 1 win, 3 losses, and an overtime loss.

Adelaide has been falling at least three goals behind in their losses against Perth Thunder, Sydney Bears and Brisbane Lightning. Closing the gap an extremely important point.

Operating with a depleted line-up heavy hitter wise, Benson, Walsh, Hazel, and Corstens all out. An opportunity for some young faces to step up and make an impact.

Making his AIHL debut, 17-year-old Daniel O’Handley. He recently represented Australia’s U18 National Team.

Adelaide came out of the gates flying; however, an opportunistic Dogs side scored the two opening goals in the first six minutes of the game off unlucky turnovers. Strat Allen and Grant Toulmin picked up the points, managing to beat Adrenaline starter Matus Trnka. However, that didn’t discourage Trnka, who went on to make 18 saves in the period.

With the early 2-0 lead Sydney had, Adelaide had to respond.

At the 11:15 mark, Daniel Chen chose to pass up the 2 on 0 pass for an unassisted snipe, recording the Adrenaline’s first goal of the game, and his first of the season.

A minute later, Tyler Leeming tied the game with a deflection off a Steve Best pass, Kevin Yu with the secondary assist.

More scoring opportunities came from Adelaide, but Dogs starter Jakob Doornbos stood tall for the rest of the period.

Taking a solid pushback from the Dogs, the Adrenaline were busy in their defensive zone, only having eight shots on goal in the period. Sydney was clearly looking for volume of shots, with a number of deflections being turned away by Trnka, and a series of centring passes broken up.

A tight matchup moving into the second period, 2-2 the score.

Adelaide picked up the pace, tightening the structure and upping the physicality. They dominated the offensive zone, looking to take the go-ahead goal.

At 14:28, Joey MacDougall got a break down the left lane, making a beautiful behind the back pass to Andrew Hamilton, who sunk his 8th goal of the season. Adelaide had taken their first lead of the game.

While they had struggled at the start of the period, losing the lead lit a fire under the skates of the Dogs, and the pressure finally boiled over with Strat Allen potting his second goal of the night, 3-3 the score.

In an early league trend of big score lines, the Adrenaline and Dogs were bringing a barn burner to the local crowd.

Moving into the third period, tied once again.

Twenty seconds into the third period, the Dogs got ahead off the faceoff with a goal from Jeremy Vasquez. Not the start to the period Adelaide wanted, the next goal was crucial.

Rookie Daniel O’Handley made his presence known when he finally got his chance on the ice, landing a huge hit, and drawing a penalty to follow.

A messy play at 11:27 led to Thomas Voller making it a 5-3 game. Trnka did his best to keep the puck out but the traffic in front was too much.

However, the next man up mentality kept the Adrenaline rolling.

With six minutes left in the game, young Julian Friederich, who had an outstanding game, put it in on the power-play to make it a one-goal game, Andrew Hamilton and Zach Boyle pulling the assists.

Adelaide was hopeful to score one more to lead the game into overtime but was unable to. despite pulling the goalie for the man advantage.

The game came to an end, with a big scrum to follow. Julian Friederich and Joey MacDougall hoping to fire up the team following the tough loss.

In what can only be described as a barn-burner, Sydney returns home with all the points, despite the close score-line.

Final score: 4-5 for the Sydney Ice Dogs

Adelaide Adrenaline shots on goal: 29 (9-9-11)

Sydney Ice Dogs shots on goal: 47 (20-14-13)

Adrenaline 1 for 4 on the power-play. 16 penalty minutes.

Ice Dogs 0 for 2 on the power-play. 20 penalty minutes.

In what was a tight loss for the Adrenaline, it was promising to see a strong four-line effort with some top players out of the line-up.

Trnka was standout in net, putting on a performance which many teams could only wish for from their local goalies.

Staying out of the box was key for the Adrenaline, enabling them to keep the momentum moving compared to some previous games.

The Adrenaline return in two weeks to face Jake Riley and the Melbourne Ice at home, a bye week gives the boys a well-earned rest as they look to come in refreshed and ready to win.
