The Perth Thunder have moved three-points clear atop the AIHL standings with a commanding 4-1 victory over the Adelaide Adrenaline at Perth Ice Arena on Saturday.

In the top-of-the-table clash, the Thunder recorded their eighth win of the season to move to 25 points, three clear of the second placed Adrenaline (22) as well as having played two less games.

Two power play goals in the second period gave the Thunder momentum, while Jonathon Bremner and Andrew Cox each tallied two points (1 goal, 1 assist each) as eight different skaters found their way onto the score sheet.

Thunder head coach Dave Kenway was happy with the spread of scoring, given the continued absence of key import Luke Judson.

“I’m really happy with it, all of our locals are scoring as well as our imports; it’s spreading (the scoring) around and looking really good” Kenway said.

Thunder forward Toni Kluuskeri said the spread of scoring was important for team confidence.

“The good thing is we have a lot of different guys scoring goals and scoring points, and every time you score it makes you happy within yourself,” Kluuskeri said.

The Thunder didn’t have it all their way; they conceded 18 third-period shots as they were forced to kill three consecutive penalties to maintain their lead; and Dave Kenway saved some praise for his penalty killers.

“I never like penalties, especially late in the third period, but our penalty kill stood up and did and awesome job for us,” Kenway said.

The Thunder out-shot the Adrenaline 35-31, with Thunder goaltender Mark Guggenberger standing out in his home debut, while the two teams combined for 32 penalty minutes, made up entirely of minor penalties.

Acting Adrenaline coach Neil Boyle praised the work rate of the Thunder players, while lamenting his own team’s poor discipline in the second period, where they gifted the Thunder four consecutive power plays.

“That hurt us for sure,” Boyle said. “Even when we were five-on-five it wasn’t going our way. They seemed just to work harder than us tonight.”

The Thunder dominated puck possession during a scoreless first period, but it wasn’t until Jonathan Boxill was serving a double minor penalty for cross-checking and slashing that they were able to capitalise.
Jordy Kyros was the first on the score sheet as he was able to beat Charlie Smart in the top corner on the power play, with Bremner and Cox tallying assists, before Greg Hyde fed Toni Kluuskeri on the power play.

Kenway was pleased with the effort of his team’s power play.

“We’ve done a lot of work on our power play in the last few weeks and it’s starting to show on the scoreboard, we’re getting some shots, getting some goals, it’s all working,” Kenway said.

The Thunder then took control early in the third period with Andrew Cox scoring, but the Adrenaline immediately responded through Kayne Fedor to make the score 3-1.

Jonathon Bremner put the result beyond the Adrenaline and, despite memories of a late fade-out against the Sydney Bears 13 days earlier and the Adrenaline having three straight power play chances, the Thunder held on for the win.

In spite of the 4-1 score line, Neil Boyle praised the effort of goaltender Charlie Smart.

“Charlie played an excellent game again,” Boyle said. “Power play goals are hard to stop when you’re a man down and they’ve got an extra shooter. We’ll take the positives out of it tonight, our defence was quite strong, we’ll just build on that and start all over again tomorrow.”

Boyle also had a simple message to his players ahead of their next game against the Thunder in Sunday’s match up.

“Stay out of the penalty box.”

The Adrenaline and Thunder played again on Sunday. Next week, the Thunder head to NSW to take on the North Stars and Bears on Saturday and Sunday respectively, while the Adrenaline have the week off.
