This weekend the Adrenaline will honour their next members of the legends club. Ben and Luke Thilthorpe are two of the most accomplished players to suit up in Adrenaline and Avalanche uniforms. Their parents, Jim and Della, started the club in the late 90s with Janet and Steve Oddy. Who would have known the club would grow and survive nearly two decades. Their sons, Ben and Luke, were very gifted players and part of the golden generation. Luke and Ben both won multiple AIHL championships and created a formidable brother duo. Each represented Australia on multiple occasions which is pretty cool! Ben and Luke will be at Benny Bar and Stadium 19 from 2:30PM on Saturday to help run a mini game with kids from Camp Quality. We caught up with Ben and Luke in a Q and A with the two brothers. Adelaide Adrenaline (AA): What was it like playing with your brother growing up and then at the highest level in Australia? Ben Thilthorpe: I really enjoyed playing with Luke growing up. We had a lot of fun travelling around Australia playing the game we both loved. That said, there was always room for a little family rivalry. Luke Thilthorpe: We had some great battles and remember much of my childhood playing backyard hockey together. We were both ultra-competitive and neither of us liked losing. It was remarkable playing for the Adelaide Avalanche together and going on to play for the National Men’s Team. We were fortunate enough to play in multiple world championships and travel the world together. Winning the Gold medal together at the World Championships, towards the end of our carers was a moment I will never forget! AA: Your parents Della and Jim were two of the founders of the club and sacrificed a lot to start the Adrenaline. As a kid, did you really appreciate all the stuff your parents did? Ben: Yes, I did. Mum and Dad made a lot of sacrifices for Luke and I and for ice hockey in the state (as did Steve and Jan Oddy). At times, I can recall hearing imports speculate that the club was making significant profits. The reality was that most years the club did not break even. If Mum and Dad were looking for a sound investment, they would not have looked to the Avalanche! Luke: Absolutely, we appreciate everything they did for not only us but also the sport of Ice Hockey in South Australia. Our parents along with the Oddys founded the Adelaide Adrenaline, this provided the best players in the State the opportunity to compete at a National level in a National competition. It also gave hope to the younger generation of players coming through an opportunity to strive to play in the AIHL. AA: Can you see yourself becoming more involved with hockey again in the future? Ben: At the moment I am busy with work, family and my involvement with the South Australian Ice Sports Federation. My time is very limited at this stage of my life. I certainly wouldn’t rule out becoming more involved with the club down the track. It would be nice to give something back, to the club that gave me so much! Luke: Absolutely, Hockey has given me so much and played a pivotal part in who I am today. I do want to give back to the Sport and know I have a lot to contribute particularly here in South Australia. I have two young boys too, so who knows! AA: What does it mean to be considered one of the 'legends' of the club? Ben: It is a really big honor. There have been so many great players and people involved with the club over the years. To be recognised in this way, is really very humbling. Luke: I feel very privileged to be considered one of the ‘legends’ of the club and be part of a special group. The club has played a huge part in my life and I am very grateful. Its extra special being inducted with my brother. AA: Who are some of the great import players that came over you played with that stick in your mind? Ben: Chris Brlecic, The Lawson Brothers (Paul and Charlie), Dylan Martini, Blair Bourgeault, Darcy Corcoran and Steve McKenna. Luke: This is a hard question! I have been so fortunate to have played with so many different imports over the years, each and everyone one of them have brought different values and traits on and off the ice and have made lifelong friends! Most memorable would have to be playing with NHL player Steve McKenna. Not to many Aussie kids get the opportunity to play alongside a former NHL captain. Also playing alongside NHL enforcer Mel Angelstad was incredible. Hands down Mel was the toughest player I have ever played with or against, and the nicest guy you could meet! Ben: Winning the AIHL Championships in 2000. We managed to pull off an incredible upset. I will never forget Eric Lien stopping a Tyler Lovering penalty shot to win us the Championships. Luke: The championships were special. I'll remember them forever.
